Pink Steel takes National Championship Cup! New meeting and training center opensThe Steel City Dragons have taken a major step forward with the opening of their meeting and training center. It also contains a full array of training equipment and paddling simulators. This new facility will add training and meeting capabilities that will be used to complement the on-water activities during the regular season and will be especially useful to keep training and team support going during the off-season. Thanks to our many donors and supporters! Steel City Crews at Pittsburgh Regatta Six full crews and over 117 paddlers from the Steel City Dragons were a major presence at the Pittsburgh Dragon boat Challenge at the EQT Pittsburgh Three Rivers Regatta on July 3. All teams were strong - congratulations to Women of Steel (Gold), Pink Steel one and two (sweeping Gold and Silver), Hot Metal Youth (Silver), Extreme Dragons (Silver), and Steel City Premier (Bronze). Steel City Dragons accepted by CFC The Local Federal Coordinating Committee for the 3 Rivers/Pennsylvania West Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) has determined that the Steel City Dragons are eligible to participate in the 2010 campaign. The CFC is a workplace charity program that allows federal government employees to donate to worthy causes. Joining the CFC will give the Steel City Dragons a major boost to their mission of increasing access to dragon boating

Because breast cancer has affected the lives of many of our friends, family, and clients, Babst, Calland, Clements and Zomnir, P.C. proudly supports local organizations that champion the cause. Our mission—the “Breast Cancer Cure Zone”—occurs each year during the month of October in conjunction with Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This year, the Breast Cancer Cure Zone is pleased to support Pink Steel. Harrisburg, PA, Aug. 30 2008 The Steel City Dragons brought three full Pittsburgh teams to the 2nd Annual Dragon Boat Race at the City of Harrisburg's Kipona Festival. The races boasted strong competition, with teams from Philadelphia, Washington DC, Baltimore, and Harrisburg. The Steel City Dragons Premier team included four paddlers from the Pittsburgh Paddlefish organizaion, and they took fourth place overall at the festival. Even better, the Premier team took silver in the Cities challenge, bested only by the U.S. champion team from Philadelphia. The Pink Steel breast cancer survivors' team competed strongly in the open/mixed category since there was no special BCS division. They finished sixth overall and were awarded a special silver medal for their powerful showing. The Steel City organization put together a special youth team, the Hot Metal Youth - Paddlers for Peace consisting of paddlers from the regular SCD youth team and the Paddlers for Peace group based at Three Rivers Rowing Association. This combined youth crew competed with some of the best in the country, finishing third in their division. Along with competing, the Steel City organization provided expert steersman to several of the other clubs, and showed a high level of boat control under very difficult conditions. Pink Steel takes off at first solo race! Windsor Ontario, July 19, 2008 Pink Steel, the breast cancer survivor (BCS) team of the Steel City Dragons, made the “A” division in their first solo out-of-town race in Windsor Ontario. This event was the 6th Annual “FDJ International Dragon Boats for the Cure”, and it attracted ten BCS teams from Canada and the US. Pink Steel qualified well, advancing to the “A” division grand final for the top four teams at the festival. All four were strong and closely matched and they finished within 0.68 seconds of each other. Pink Steel won third overall, an outstanding performance for their first away race on their own. To top it off, Pink Steel was awarded $1500 to bring home as a contribution to the Pittsburgh Division of Susan G. Komen for the Cure. The event and the Pink Steel paddlers were featured in a news story and videos published by the Windsor Star. Steel City Dragons surge to win Ithaca final! Ithaca NY, July 12, 2008 The Steel City Dragons kicked into their trademark race-finishing surge to post a dominant division win at the Fingerlakes International Dragon Boat Festival. The July 12 festival, drawing some of the most powerful teams in the region for cash prizes, had a full day of highly competitive 250 and 500-meter races. The Steel City Dragons posted the second fastest 500-meter time of the day in one of their qualifying races, and went on to win the B division grand final (5th place overall). Three Steel City Dragons teams on Ithaca Odyssey Ithaca NY, July 13, 2007 The Steel City Dragons made a big impression on the second annual Finger Lakes International Dragon Boat Festival held in Ithaca New York on July 13. Along with the Steel City Dragons competitive crew, the organization was also represented by the Hot Metal Youth crew and the Pink Steel breast cancer survivors crew. The regular Hot Metal Youth paddlers were joined by youth from Philadelphia to create a fast boat that competed well against the all-adult teams. Pink Steel joined their Hope Afloat sister team and a new local Ithaca suvivors' team to give the festival it's first breast cancer ceremony. Race coverage was featured prominently in the local press, along with pictures of the Steel City teams: Dragon Drama: Competitors celebrate culture and friendship Pittsburgh is Steel City!Steel City Dragons winners at 2007 Pittsburgh Race Pittsburgh, June 16 2007 The Steel City Dragons showed steely determination at the 2007 Pittsburgh Dragon Boat Races held at Pittsburgh's Station Square. The Steel City Competitive crew won an electrifying grand final race to take the overall gold medal. The Hot Metal Youth crew won gold in the youth division, then paddled competitively in the open mixed races, winning their seeding division. The Pink Steel breast cancer survivors followed up a moving remembrance ceremony with a win in their division. Adding fun to the mix, the Wrecking Crew recreational team rocked the crowd with their trademark chant "We will, we will, REC you!" after strong finishes in their qualifying heats. Thanks to Three Rivers Rowing Association for hosting this event at it's new venue. More pictures here.
