Three Steel City Dragons teams on Ithaca Odyssey
Ithaca NY, July 13, 2007
The Steel City Dragons made a big impression on the second annual
Finger Lakes International Dragon Boat Festival held in Ithaca New York on
July 13. Along with the Steel City Dragons competitive crew, the
organization was also represented by the Hot Metal Youth crew and the Pink
Steel breast cancer survivors crew. The regular Hot Metal Youth paddlers
were joined by youth from Philadelphia to create a fast boat that competed
well against the all-adult teams. Pink Steel joined their Hope Afloat sister
team and a new local Ithaca suvivors' team to give the festival it's first
breast cancer ceremony.Race coverage was featured prominently in the
local press, along with pictures of the Steel City teams:

Pittsburgh Race
Pittsburgh, June 16 2007
The Steel City Dragons showed steely determination at the 2007
Pittsburgh Dragon Boat Races held at Pittsburgh's Station Square. The Steel
City Competitive crew won an electrifying grand final race to take the
overall gold medal. The Hot Metal Youth crew won gold in the youth division,
then paddled competitively in the open mixed races, winning their seeding
division. The Pink Steel breast cancer survivors followed up a moving
remembrance ceremony with a win in their division. Adding fun to the mix,
the Wrecking Crew recreational team rocked the crowd with their trademark
chant "We will, we will, REC you!" after strong finishes in their qualifying
heats. Thanks to Three Rivers Rowing Association for hosting this event at
it's new venue. More pictures here.
Team Pittsburgh Wins Gold in Philly!
Philadelphia, June 9 2007
Team Pittsburgh won the overall grand final and
gold medals at Independence Dragon Boat Regatta in Philadelphia. The team,
coached by Ben Ledewitz of
the Pittsburgh Paddlefish and Larry Wentzel of the Steel City Dragons, is
made of of some of the top athletes from boat teams. On their way to the
gold, Team Pittsburgh won both of their qualifying heats, and improved their
race times over the course of the event. The team is proud to represent
their home town of Pittsburgh and the two local clubs that provided paddlers
and support, joining in friendship and love of the sport of dragon boating.
Carol Raber Memorial Golf Scramble hits
the green!
Pittsburgh, June 3, 2007
The first annual Carol Raber Memorial Golf
Scramble was a big success, despite threats of rain on an otherwise
beautiful afternoon. Over 76 golfers joined the fun. The event commemorates
Carol Raber, a friend of the Steel City Dragons who recently passed away
from breast cancer. Support for those with breast cancer is an important
part of the Steel City Dragons vision that includes Pittsburgh's first and
only team of breast cancer survivors, Pink Steel.
The team gives special thanks to our generous
sponsors and donors! Thanks too
to the organizers and participants.
