Hillman Cancer Center honors Pink Steel
November 11, 2011

The Hillman Cancer Center at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center unveiled a plaque honoring the Pink Steel breast cancer survivor team of the Steel City Dragons. The plaque was permanently installed in the Center’s third floor treatment room waiting area alongside a photograph of the team taken after they won the 2010 national championship. The hope is that the display will be an inspiration to those beginning or receiving treatment, because each rejoicing paddler in the picture is a breast cancer survivor. Ceremonies celebrating the unveiling were attended by the center’s doctors, nurses, and other caregivers along with Pink Steel athletes and their coach, Lynne Franks-Meinert. The team is especially grateful to Dr. Barry Lembersky, UPMC oncologist, for his financial support and Joseph Rapp and Tammy Gatto of the Hillman center for making it all happen.
